HR for Startups
The HR foundations every growing Indian startup needs in 2026
Under the Labour Codes, informal HR is now a real risk. A prioritised set of foundations for teams of 10 to 100.
Registrations and records first
Confirm Shops & Establishments registration for each location, PF registration (mandatory at 20 employees) and ESIC where applicable. Maintain a single employee master with appointment letters, ID and bank details, UAN and nominations.
Appointment letters are now mandatory
The Labour Codes require appointment letters in a prescribed format with statutory disclosures. Replace informal offer emails with a standard template covering role, wages, working hours and leave.
Structure pay the right way
Check that basic pay plus DA is at least 50% of total remuneration, or understand the impact when it is not — PF, gratuity and encashment will be calculated on the higher figure. With the PF ceiling now ₹25,000, cost this into hiring budgets.
Make ownership clear
Decide who maintains records, approves leave, prepares payroll inputs and answers employee questions. A one-page ownership map beats a lengthy manual at this stage.
Policies that matter early
Leave and attendance, code of conduct, POSH (an Internal Committee is required at 10+ employees), and a clear exit process. Add structure only when it solves a real operational need.
