PF wage ceiling rises to ₹25,000: payroll impact explained
From 17 September 2026 the PF wage ceiling moved from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month. More employees become mandatorily covered and capped contributions go up by ₹1,200 each side.
What was notified
Notification S.O. 5109(E), dated 17 September 2026, set ₹25,000 per month as the wage ceiling for Chapter III (Provident Fund) of the Code on Social Security, 2020, replacing the ₹15,000 ceiling. It took effect on publication in the Official Gazette — the same day.
Who is newly covered
Employees whose “wages” under the Code are above ₹15,000 and up to ₹25,000 a month can now fall within mandatory PF coverage, subject to membership and excluded-employee provisions. Remember “wages” follows the Codes’ definition, so allowances above 50% of pay may be added back.
Contribution math
Employer and employee each contribute 12% of wages. Where contributions are restricted to the ceiling, the maximum monthly contribution per side rises from ₹1,800 (12% of ₹15,000) to ₹3,000 (12% of ₹25,000). For an employee on ₹25,000 wages that is ₹1,200 less take-home pay each month and ₹1,200 more employer cost — plus higher EPS and EDLI-linked administrative charges.
Contract labour and budgets
Principal employers should check that contractors have re-computed PF for their workers, since liabilities can flow back to the principal employer. Re-forecast annual people cost: a 100-person team where everyone is at the new cap adds roughly ₹14.4 lakh a year in employer PF alone.
What to do
Identify newly coverable employees, update payroll masters, refresh offer-letter CTC breakdowns, communicate the take-home change in advance, and confirm treatment with your PF consultant.
